Why did you become a teacher?
"I come from a family of teachers. I am an extremely physical person, and teaching allows me to be constantly in motion. Also, each class is its own new thing, so I can be endlessly inventive."

What experience do you have learning a foreign language or living in a foreign culture?
"I've studied French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and Japanese. I've spent time studying Spanish in both Guatemala and Ecuador, and I lived in Ecuador for a year."

How has your international experience helped your teaching?

It gives me more compassion for our students who are very smart, but sometimes have trouble expressing their ideas."

"My best times are spent doing physical things out of doors--I love hiking, walking, yoga, and biking. I am also a folk singer, an artist, and a poet."

Why do you like Portland?

Why do you recommend our school to students?
"The staff is very dedicated to helping students learn English in ways that are both entertaining and effective. It has a great location--both in terms of being downtown, and in terms of being in the Pacific Northwest, which is lovely."

What experience do you have learning a foreign language or living in a foreign culture?
"I studied German abroad in Vienna, Austria. My undergraduate minor was in German. I lived in Hokkaido, Japan and taught ESL to Junior High School students through the JET Program. What experience do you have learning a foreign language or living in a foreign culture?
"I lived in Germany for one year and in Switzerland for three years."

How has your international experience helped your teaching?
"In the beginning I was overwhelmed by the experience of life in a new culture - I didn't know how to pay my bills, buy bus tickets, etc. It seemed like everything was done differently than in my country. However, there were occasionally people who went out of their way to explain things to me or help me do things, and their kindness and generosity made a huge impression on me. I swore that if I ever came back to the U.S., I would go out of my way to help foreigners adjust to life in my country."

What do you do when you are away from school?
"I love reading fiction and non-fiction, and I love being outdoors, especially at the beautiful Oregon coast."

Why do you like Portland?
"It's just the right size - big enough to have everything that I need, but not so big that it's difficult to get around. Also, I like the international feel of Portland. There are so many ethnic restaurants and stores and such a diversity of people that there is always something new to try."

Why do you recommend our school to students?
"What makes the ELP such an excellent school is that the small class size allows the teachers to get really familiar with the students' skills and personalities. This means that we can tailor our lessons to the specific needs of the students so that their class time is always productive. It also means that the teachers have the time to answer questions and help students outside of class too. Also, because we get to know our students as people, we genuinely care about their progress and success."
