The English Language Program - Housing

The English Language Program helps international students with housing in 2 ways:

  • We can reserve a room in our Student House for you.
  • We can arrange a Homestay for you.

  • STUDENT HOUSE

In the Student House, you will share a big house with other international students enrolled in The English Language Program. There is an American manager who lives in the house. He can help you with everything about living in the Student House.

In the student house, you will have a private room with your own key. Your room will have a bed, desk, lamp, closet, and mirror. We will provide towels, sheets, blankets, and pillows for you. Most rooms have their own sink. There are shared bathrooms on each floor of the house.

In the student house you will share a large, fully stocked kitchen, a large living room, and a dining room. You can use the cable TV, the VCR, a desktop computer, and our free wireless internet connection that covers the whole house. The house also has a shared phone line and answering machine. There is a coin operated washer and dryer in the basement.

Free bread and pastries are served twice a week and free bagels are served once a week. As a resident in the student house, you will have one weekly cleaning chore.

The Student House is located in the "Northwest 23rd" neighborhood. It is a very exciting and convenient part of Portland. It is surrounded by many great shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. We are a short walk to 2 large grocery stores.

The Student House is near 2 bus lines, the MAX light rail train, the Portland Streetcar and 7 blocks from Portland's fareless square (free public transportation). It takes 20 minutes to walk to our school and 10 minutes by bus or train.

We are also a 5 minute walk to Portland's Rose Gardens and Forest Park, which features 30 miles of hiking and biking trails.

When you move in to the student house you will pay the following:

  • First Month Rent $475
  • First Month Utilities $75
  • Security Deposit $200 (this is 100% refundable when you move out)
  • Key Deposit $50 (this is 100% refundable when you move out)
  • Upkeep Fee $50 (this is a one time, nonrefundable fee)

  • To reserve your room please send the $75 housing placement fee and a $300 housing deposit. The deposit will be a part of your month's rent.

Space is limited to 7 students so please apply early! If the student House is full, we will arrange a good homestay for you and you can move into the student house when it becomes available.

    HOMESTAYS

If you like we can introduce you to an American family. This is a great way to experience Portland life and American culture. Homestays are also a great way to improve your English while making life long friends.

We carefully choose our homestay families and we find the family that is the best match for you. All of our families are friendly and kind. They have clean, safe houses, and they are eager to open their homes to you.

In your homestay, you will have a private, furnished room. Two meals a day are provided (usually breakfast and dinner). Most Homestays are about 30 minutes away from school by bus or train.

The cost of your homestay is $600 per month. The minimum stay for a homestay is one month. The homestay contract is month by month, but if both you and your host family agree, your homestay can last for as many months as you wish.

To reserve your room please send the $75 housing placement fee and a $300 housing deposit. The deposit will be a part of your month's rent.

For help arranging a homestay or the student house, please fill out our housing request form.

    Hello!

Welcome to the United States and Portland, and to our home!

We have had many international students for the last 20 years or so from many countries. We enjoy meeting people from other cultures and also sharing our home with them.

We look forward to meeting you. We hope you will have a wonderful experience in Portland and with our family.

    The Baker Family

    Hello!

We are a family of 4: 2 adults and 2 boys. We have a very laid-back household, and spend a lot of family time together. We are not looking for a room-mate, we are looking for someone who can become a temporary family member.

My boys have gotten very attached to our exchange students in the past, and we have taken our last exchange students with us on our trips to the coast, the mountains, and to visit friends.

We have enjoyed our last exchange students and we look forward to having another.

    Sincerely,
    The Peterson Family

    Welcome to Portland!

We are looking forward to your arrival. Our family has been hosting foreign students since June 2002. This has been a very positive experience for us and we hope to provide you with an enjoyable and supportive homestay experience.

There are many things to see and do in and around Portland. We hope that when it is time for you to go back to your home country, you leave with very fond memories of your time here in Portland. Have a safe trip and I will see you at the airport!

    Sincerely,
    The Porter Family

We anxiously await your visit. Oregon is a great place to live. We have a little of everything here. It is only a short drive to the beach or the mountains. We have really enjoyed this past year with the students that have visited us here.

Welcome again to Oregon. We look forward to having you as part of our family.

    Sincerely
    The Price Family

    Welcome to our home!

We are excited to share our family, in beautiful Oregon, with you.

We are a busy home. Sometimes we are not the neatest household, but fun, and full of life. We also enjoy cooking, baking, and when James starts barbequing, we suddenly find our house full of friends.

We look forward to welcoming you.

    The Taylor Family

    Hello,

We have been hosting students from other countries for over 11 years. We love to add to our family in this way. We do not consider ourselves a host family, we are your American family and while you are here you are a complete member of our family. When you return home we like to continue contact with you as we would one of our children.

We look forward to adding you to our family.

    Sincerely,
    The Burke Family
